Tips to Improve Your Mental Health

Share

By Megan & Nahum Kozak

The topic of mental health has never been more prevalent than in the past 18 months. So why is mental health such a struggle right now, and what can we do to improve it?

Mental health encompasses our psychological, emotional, and social well-being. It impacts how we feel, think, and act. Just like our physical health, our mental health can fluctuate from good to bad days.

External stressors such as family pressures, job stress, and the ongoing effects of a global pandemic can significantly impact our mental health. The uncertainty and worry that come with these stressors can cloud our perception of the world.

However, amidst these challenges, there is a silver lining. The past year-and-a-half has brought mental health to the forefront of societal discussions. The importance of mental health has emerged from the shadows and is now a topic of mainstream consciousness. Self-care has become a trending hashtag, wellbeing is a new focus across industries, and seeking professional support for mental health and relationships is becoming more normalized.

As Co-Founders and Directors of Lighthouse Relationships Psychology and Counselling Practice, we have worked with individuals and couples across Australia to support their mental health and relationships. Based on our research, expertise, and experience, here are our top five tips for building positive habits for mental health:

1. Sleep: Establish a regular sleep routine to ensure your body and mind have the opportunity to rest and recharge.

2. Exercise & Healthy Food: Prioritize physical activity and nourishing food to boost your mood and overall well-being.

3. Mindfulness & Meditation: Incorporate moments of presence and stillness to enhance your mental health and sense of worth.

4. Social Connection: Foster quality connections with family and friends to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation.

5. Seek Support: Don't hesitate to reach out to professionals for help and guidance in times of mental health struggles.

Remember, mental health is just as important as physical health. By implementing these tips and seeking support when needed, you can take positive steps towards improving your mental well-being.
