Tips for making the most out of a mental health day

Share

Feeling the need for a mental health day is more common than you think. In fact, according to the 2021 Work Shouldn’t Hurt Survey, more than one in five workers reported suffering from a mental health issue related to work. It's important for both employers and employees to take mental wellbeing just as seriously as physical health.

If you find yourself in need of a mental health day, here are four tips to help you make the most of your time off:

1. Know your rights: Mental health days count as sick days, and you have a right to take time off if you are unwell. Full-time workers are entitled to 10 personal leave days per year, while part-time workers have leave days determined by their weekly schedule. Some workplaces may require evidence of needing leave, but your GP can provide a medical certificate without disclosing specific details.

2. Build immunity to guilt-tripping: Don't let your boss guilt you into working when you're unwell. You have a right to take time off for mental health reasons without providing detailed explanations. Your personal medical situation is not required to be disclosed to your employer.

3. Stay offline: Disconnect from work completely on your mental health day. Resist the urge to check emails or respond to work-related notifications. Use the day to relax, recharge, and focus on self-care activities that help you unwind.

4. Put in prevention measures: If you find that work-related stress is impacting your mental health, speak up. Employers have a duty to provide a safe working environment, including addressing psychological hazards that can contribute to poor mental health. Resources such as the Mind Your Head campaign can help identify and address workplace factors that may be negatively impacting mental wellbeing.

Remember, taking care of your mental health is just as important as physical health. If you need support, don't hesitate to reach out to mental health services such as Lifeline, Beyond Blue, or the Suicide Callback Service. Taking a mental health day is a proactive step towards prioritizing your wellbeing, so don't hesitate to take the time you need to rest and recharge.
