Physical activity is crucial for maintaining both physical and mental health. In adults, staying active helps prevent and manage noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes. It also reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety while enhancing brain health and overall well-being. For children and adolescents, physical activity promotes bone health, healthy growth, muscle development, and cognitive growth. Unfortunately, 31% of adults and 80% of adolescents do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity.

The global target is to reduce levels of physical inactivity in adults and adolescents by 10% by 2025 and 15% by 2030 from the 2010 baseline. Failure to do so could lead to a significant cost to public health care systems. Physical inactivity is associated with an increased risk of noncommunicable diseases and other poor health outcomes. Sedentary behavior, such as sitting for extended periods, also contributes to health risks.

WHO recommends regular physical activity for people of all ages. Even small amounts of physical activity can provide health benefits. The organization also provides guidelines on sedentary behavior and sleep for children under five years old. It is important to limit sedentary behavior and prioritize muscle-strengthening activities.

Increasing physical activity levels requires a collective effort from governments, communities, and individuals. Implementing policies that promote physical activity in various settings and increasing accessibility to sports and recreational facilities are key steps to improving public health. WHO supports countries in implementing these actions through policy guidance, advocacy, technical tools, and monitoring progress.

By committing to regular physical activity, individuals can improve their health and well-being while reducing the risk of noncommunicable diseases. It is essential to prioritize physical activity and limit sedentary behavior to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
