Share

The fashion industry in New Zealand is making a larger economic and cultural contribution than many may realize, according to a recent report by Mindful Fashion NZ. The report, titled “Threads of Tomorrow,” reveals that the fashion sector added $7.8 billion to the economy in 2023, accounting for 1.9% of the GDP and employing 76,011 workers, with 78% of them being female.

Juliette Hogan, a prominent figure in the New Zealand fashion industry, described the report as “invaluable” and highlighted the industry's creativity, talent, and potential. While the industry has faced challenges, including the recent cancellation of New Zealand Fashion Week, the report sheds light on the importance of the sector and the need for collective action to overcome obstacles.

Jacinta FitzGerald, the chief executive of Mindful Fashion NZ, expressed surprise at the report's findings, emphasizing the industry's significance and calling for greater recognition of its value. The organization, which started with a small group of designers sharing a common vision, has now grown to over 100 business members focused on creating a sustainable and thriving industry.

Christina Perriam, founder of luxury lifestyle and fashion brand Perriam, highlighted the importance of supporting the local fashion industry and the challenges faced by New Zealand manufacturers. She stressed the need for collaboration and shared values to ensure the industry's survival and growth.

As the industry navigates a critical turning point, there is a call for consumers to support local businesses, invest in quality products, and care for their clothes. The hope is that by working together, the New Zealand fashion industry can capitalize on opportunities, overcome challenges, and continue to thrive on both a local and global scale.
