If you are a resident of Ipswich, you may have noticed the new state-of-the-art Mental Health Acute Inpatient Service building that has recently opened its doors. This $104.6 million facility is designed to provide the community with access to a wide range of support and healthcare services.
Featuring open spaces, rooftop courtyards, internal green spaces, recreation areas, gyms, table tennis, and barbecue facilities, the building is focused on promoting social interaction among staff and visitors. With 64 beds, it has 16 more than the previous facility, offering improved services to patients in need.
West Moreton Health staff are also benefiting from working in this modern, secure building focused on patient wellness and recovery. The Chief Executive, Hannah Bloch, has expressed the importance of providing world-class services to the community and creating a calming environment with plenty of natural light.
Throughout the design and construction phases, consumers, community representatives, and First Nations Elders were consulted to ensure the building is culturally and socially inclusive. The design features specific elements such as First Nations artwork, bush tucker areas, and yarning circles to cater to the needs of the local community.
Since opening its doors in November, the reaction from both staff and patients has been overwhelmingly positive. With breakout rooms, a gymnasium, and a serene environment, the building is fostering a sense of wellbeing and recovery among patients utilizing the service.
Looking ahead, West Moreton Health is already planning for the future. Construction has begun on a $710 million acute services building beside Ipswich Hospital, aiming to deliver extra beds, a new emergency department, and operating theatres by 2028.
Overall, the new Mental Health Acute Inpatient Service building is a significant investment in healthcare infrastructure that will support the growing needs of the Ipswich community for years to come.
