New research suggests that maintaining a healthy diet, in line with the Australian Dietary Guidelines, can actually be cheaper than sticking to an unhealthy diet. In fact, it could save a family of four up to A$160 off their fortnightly shopping bill. Not only does a healthy diet save money, but it also plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of developing chronic diseases, which are a significant concern in Australia.

The Australian Dietary Guidelines provide recommendations on the types and quantities of foods that most Australians should consume for optimal health and wellbeing. It includes eating a variety of nutritious foods from the main food groups while limiting the intake of foods high in saturated fats, added sugars, salt, and alcohol.

Unfortunately, research shows that fewer than 7% of Australians are meeting the recommended vegetable intake, and the average healthy diet score is just 55 out of 100. Many Australians are consuming excessive amounts of discretionary items such as processed and packaged foods, which are not part of the main food groups.

Recent research conducted in Warrnambool, Victoria, compared the cost of two baskets of groceries – one aligned with the Australian Dietary Guidelines and the other reflecting the current average Australian diet. The results showed that the healthy basket was approximately $167 cheaper per fortnight for a family of four at the most affordable supermarket.

While a healthy diet may be more affordable than an unhealthy one, it is still a challenge for many families, especially those on lower incomes. Policy action is needed to make recommended diets more accessible and affordable for all Australians.

In order to cut spending on groceries and support health, there are several strategies families can implement, such as planning meatless meals, buying in bulk, freezing meals, shopping at alternative locations for fresh produce, opting for generic brands, and taking advantage of specials.

Ultimately, by making small changes to our diets and shopping habits, we can save money, improve our health, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. It's time to prioritize our well-being and financial security by choosing a healthy and budget-friendly diet.
