Tips for Summer Driving: Preventing a Breakdown

Share

Summer is the perfect time to hit the open road with your caravan in tow. But before you set off on your adventure, it's important to make sure you're prepared for the journey ahead.

One of the first things you should do is check the condition of your caravan's tyres. Tyres can deteriorate quickly when not in use, so be sure to look for any cracking in the sidewalls. Additionally, take the time to inspect the braking system, indicators, brake lights, and coupling gear to ensure everything is in working order.

Properly balancing your caravan and distributing the load as advised by the manufacturer is crucial for a safe and smooth journey. You don't want to discover you have an uneven load when you're already on the road. And remember, never overload your vehicle or caravan beyond their designed carrying capacity.

Having breakdown cover arranged is a smart move. Our caravan and motorhome breakdown cover, developed with The Camping and Caravanning Club, includes standard RAC Breakdown Cover along with specialist benefits to protect your caravan.

As you hit the road, be mindful of vulnerable road users such as horse riders, cyclists, and pedestrians. Give them plenty of space and reduce your speed when passing. In urban areas, keep an eye out for cyclists approaching on your left.

Bright sunshine can also pose challenges for drivers, causing glare that can hinder visibility. Always keep a pair of sunglasses in the car, making sure they are suitable for driving by checking the filter category number. Avoid wearing category four sunglasses or variable tint lens sunglasses while behind the wheel.

Summer road rage can also be a concern due to rising temperatures and increased traffic. Plan your route to avoid busy times and take breaks to de-stress. And if you find yourself in a breakdown situation without cover, give our non-member helpline a call for assistance.

Before you hit the road this summer, take the time to ensure your caravan is ready, be mindful of vulnerable road users, protect your eyes from glare, and plan for a stress-free journey. Happy travels!
